What is Express Entry?
Express Entry is Canada’s online application management system for skilled workers who want to become permanent residents. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) uses it to manage three federal economic immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW), the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST).
Before IRCC ranks you for draws, you must meet the minimum eligibility requirements of at least one of those programs. Only then can you create an Express Entry profile and enter the candidate pool. Key immigration terms
- Express Entry profile — Your online record of age, education, language, work experience, and other factors. You need program eligibility before the profile is complete.

How to improve your eligibility
- Raise language scores — FSW and CEC need CLB 7 in all four skills. Use the CLB Converter to set a target before retaking IELTS or CELPIP.
- Gain skilled work experience — Another year of qualified NOC work can help FSW points and may open CEC if experience is in Canada.
- Confirm your NOC and duties — Experience must match a skilled NOC unit group. Search titles with the NOC Finder.
- Prepare settlement funds (FSW) — IRCC publishes minimum amounts by family size; exemptions apply with a valid job offer or authorized work in Canada.
